Lead is one of the poisonous heavy metals that affects the biotic system. In this research, the toxic effects of different concentrations of triethyllead chloride( TriEL ) was studied on the acellular slime mold Physarum polycephalum cytoplasmic shuttle streaming, growth, structure and migration of Physarum plasmodium. The plasmodium was treated with different concentrations of TriEL ( 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 μM). The results showed that concentrations of TriEL<10 μM had no obvious effect on the studied parameters. Initial or slight signs of toxicity appeared at Concentrations between 20 50 μM. However, 50 μM TriELwas sublethal. They caused mostly irreversible condensation of the plasmodial strands, blebbing of the plasma membrane, vacuolization of the cytoplasm and elongation of the cytoplasmic shuttle streaming period. 60 μM TriEL was lethal and caused irreversible high blebbing of the plasma membrane, direct and rapid stop of cytoplasmic streaming followed by contraction of the whole plasmodium, strong blebbing of the plasma memmbrane, depigmentation, vacuolization and complete fixation of the cytoplasm (neither growth nor migration occurred on nutrient agar plates). © 2009 Jordan Journal of Biological Sciences. The Changing Pattern of Birefringence in Plasmodia of the Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum

Plasmodia of the acellular slime mold, Physarum polycephalum, reveal a complex and changing pattern of birefringence when examined with a sensitive polarizing microscope. Positively birefringent fibrils are found throughout the ectoplasmic region of the plasmodium. In the larger strands they may be oriented parallel to the strand axis, or arranged circularly or spirally along the periphery of e...

Assessing the chemotaxis behavior of Physarum polycephalum to a range of simple volatile organic chemicals

The chemotaxis behavior of the plasmodial stage of the true slime mold Physarum Polycephalum was assessed when given a binary choice between two volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) placed in its environment. All possible binary combinations were tested between 19 separate VOCs selected due to their prevalence and biological activity in common plant and insect species. The slime mold exhibited pos...

Genetics of Somatic Fusion in PHYSARUM POLYCEPHALUM: the Ppii Strain.

Plasmodial (somatic) fusion in a strain of Physarum polycephalum, a true slime mold, is controlled by four loci, each of which displays simple dominance. Two diploid plasmodia fuse with each other only if they are phenotypically or genotypically identical for all four fusion loci.

Regulation of Dna Replication in the Nuclei of the Slime Mold Physarum Polycephalum

Nuclei in G2 phase of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum, when transplanted, by plasmodial coalescence, into an S-phase plasmodium, failed to start another round of DNA synthesis. In the reciprocal combination, S-phase nuclei in a G2-phase host continued DNA synthesis for several hours without appreciable decrease in rate. It is suggested that the beginning of DNA replication is determined by...

On the role of the plasmodial cytoskeleton in facilitating intelligent behavior in slime mold Physarum polycephalum

The plasmodium of slime mold Physarum polycephalum behaves as an amorphous reaction-diffusion computing substrate and is capable of apparently 'intelligent' behavior. But how does intelligence emerge in an acellular organism? Through a range of laboratory experiments, we visualize the plasmodial cytoskeleton-a ubiquitous cellular protein scaffold whose functions are manifold and essential to li...
